42 year established Art Gallery/Custom Frame Shop
Business Description
This Business is a 42-year established Art Gallery that also offers full service Custom Picture Framing as an integral part of its annual Sales.
The Gallery currently exhibits a well curated mix of original works in a variety of media by Nationally known Artists as well as Local/Regional talent.
Custom framing orders from various institutional accounts including local Colleges & Universities, Hospital Groups, Governmental Agencies, and Professional Organizations all provide a predictable revenue stream throughout the year. These are long-standing relationships that have been carefully nurtured to ensure continuity.
Our Social Media presence/efforts have been well received with a monthly newsletter receiving an average “Open-Rate” of 45%. That said, like so many other owner-operated businesses, if the owner is responsible for maintaining its own social media (especially if they’re in their 70’s), other tasks often take priority. We suspect that a different generation of owner would likely shift these priorities and pursue a more full-throated campaign.
Also of note, in the aftermath of the Covid 19 shutdowns, the Gallery/Frame Shop Industry has experienced a “thinning out” of sorts, significantly reducing the amount of competition we have historically dealt with. Indeed, even the “Big Box” players have significantly reduced their offerings (or discontinued business altogether- i.e. JoAnne Stores) leaving us as one of the last remaining “full service” establishments in the Capital District.
Owner benefit/Buyer profile:
A Gallery/Framing establishment offers an individual many potential rewards by:
• Providing all the benefits that small business ownership brings – self-determination, personal satisfaction and fulfilment.
• Being a part of the exciting world of Art and connecting art enthusiasts with imagery they may wish to view and collect.
• A chance to be creative – taking a variety of everyday items (photos, prints, paintings, family heirlooms, documents, etc.) and transforming them into a one-of-a-kind finished product.
• Working in a pleasant atmosphere, where the customer is typically in a good mood, happy to be accomplishing something they’ve thought about doing for some time.
• Generally, working at their own pace – scheduling the workload as they see fit, allowing them flexibility for finishing other tasks (either business related or personal).
• A chance to work with their hands. While the Industry has evolved to allow even a “modestly handy” individual to provide a quality finished product – the person who wishes to perform the framing tasks themselves will find a great sense of fulfillment in doing so (and increasing profit margins in the process)
• The opportunity to establish business relationships that often evolve into friendships.
In general, the owner’s business experience has been overwhelmingly positive, and the fact that for over 43 years they have been able to navigate and survive a number of National Economic ups and downs, as well as National crises (i.e.. 9/11, Covid 19) speaks to the resiliency of the business, and we believe that it would prove to be a wonderful opportunity for an individual or couple interested in operating a small business.

- The business is located in an upscale shopping plaza that houses many complimentary shops and boutiques that cater to a relatively high demographic.
Local competition has thinned over the last few years, leaving us as one of the few remaining full service Gallery/Frame Shops in the area. Additionally, National chains and Big Box Stores have begun to scale back their offerings, making them far less competitive. In one case (JoAnne's Stores) they have discontinued services altogether. - Opportunities for Growth
- Corporate consulting for office wall décor has contributed to Sales over the years, and it can contribute significantly to Annual Sales. One such account resulted in a sale of over $50,000. This revenue source could prove to be a valuable “add-on” for an owner who wanted to direct more attention to this market.
Additionally a new owner could expand their offerings to include pottery, art glass, sculpture, or gifts to further enhance Sales.
