4 Year Old Startup Candle Making Business | Ready For Its New Owner
SoYum Candle Company was a startup in Berea, KY in 2021. Our first year in Berea, we did $240K in sales. My wife and I spent countless hours building, designing, and creating the business. From the logo design all the way to finished product in a store that we designed, and built.
We have since developed the business into several areas. Our largest margin is on the candle making experiences. Those have an 80%+ margin. We sell candles in store, online, offer multiple sizes, and we even have a subscription box for exclusive fragrances each month.
We also developed reed diffuser products and a candle making at home kit.
If this was run by an owner/operator, it would be profitable right out of the gate. It can be run by a company with full staff too, if there is enough capital available to cover marketing.
The business is fantastic, it’s cute, fun, inspiring and just a fun place to be. Customers regularly asked if this was a franchise or if we just put it together ourselves. They were shocked to find that there was no template. We figured it all out. We made lots of mistakes, and lots of corrections.
Franchising is an option. We chose not to invest the capital to do that, because we were running out of time (2 kids, 2 careers). This business is perfect to be franchised. And many wanted to franchise their own store from us, in places like Gatlinburg, TN, Asheville, NC, Charleston, SC, etc.
The upside potential with this business is massive. It really just needs an owner/operator or someone with a little bit of capital to invest in product development and marketing. And ideally, franchising. That’s where the money is.
